City of Swift Current Accessibility Plan
Our plan
The new City of Swift Current Accessibility Plan paints a picture of the current state of accessibility in our community and how we will build on the work already underway. The plan also outlines how we will keep identifying, removing, and preventing barriers on an ongoing basis.

Developing our new accessibility plan
How the plan was created
The City of Swift Current developed a three-year accessibility plan to show our commitment and guide our work under The Accessible Saskatchewan Act. This plan will guide our priorities, budgets, and actions to make our policies, spaces, and services more accessible.
Working with Squarely Accessible, an accessibility consultancy, we gathered input from our community to make sure our plan reflects real experiences and needs. Key steps included:
Creating an Accessibility Advisory Group
- Our Accessibility Advisory Group held regular meetings to shape the overall approach to our accessibility plan.
Engaging our community
- We developed two surveys to collect input about accessibility barriers and solutions: one for people living with disabilities and/or their caregivers, and another for community members and allies.
- We conducted focus group sessions to gather in-depth feedback from select groups.
Our Vision
Why are we doing this now?
Inclusion is a core value that guides how we serve City of Swift Current residents.
Accessibility is a shared responsibility. We’re working together with residents, organizations, and community groups to build a more inclusive city.
The plan will guide our first three years of activities. We will share updates on our progress from time to time and by following the guidelines set out in The Accessible Saskatchewan Act.
What is a disability?
The Accessible Saskatchewan Act defines disability as any impairment that, in interaction with a barrier, hinders an individual’s full and equal participation in society. It includes physical, mental, intellectual, cognitive, learning, communication or sensory impairments and functional limitations. These can be permanent, temporary or episodic in nature, or evident or not.
The Act aims to remove all types of barriers that prevent or limit full participation for people with disabilities.
Please refer to the Province of Saskatchewan’s Accessible Saskatchewan Act website for additional definitions and other helpful information.
