City Invites Community Engagement to Develop Accessibility Plan

Post Date:10/27/2025 9:54 AM

For Immediate Release
October 27, 2025

The City of Swift Current is developing a three-year accessibility plan as a first step to show our commitment to inclusion and guide our efforts under The Accessible Saskatchewan Act. This plan will guide the City’s priorities, actions, and budgets to make City policies, spaces, and services more accessible.

To ensure the plan reflects real experiences and community needs, the City is inviting input from people with disabilities and the wider community. Feedback will be gathered through a public survey and a series of focus groups. Residents are encouraged to get involved by completing the online survey which will be available from November 3 - 17 and/or signing up for a focus group at www.swiftcurrent.ca/accessibility.

An Accessibility Advisory Group, which will include individuals with lived experience of disability, is also being established to help guide the planning process and ensure diverse voices are heard.

“Inclusion is a core value that guides how we serve City of Swift Current residents,” states City of Swift Current Mayor, Al Bridal. “Accessibility is a shared responsibility. We have made some progress in removing barriers and being more inclusive. But there is still work to do, and we will keep finding gaps and improving how we do things – not that we will be perfect at it in the short term, but it gives us a road map for the future, and it starts by listening and learning. ”

The new accessibility plan will:

  • show existing supports, policies, and processes
  • identify current barriers to accessibility
  • explain the steps the City will take to build on the work already happening

It will also include a longer-term approach for finding and seeking solutions to any remaining barriers.

The City of Swift Current encourages everyone to share their experience to create meaningful improvements together.
