Aquatic Centre Reopening Following Major Capital Upgrades

Post Date:09/26/2025 4:25 PM

SWIFT CURRENT, SK – The City of Swift Current is pleased to announce that the Aquatic Centre will reopen to the public on Sunday, September 28, 2025, following its extended summer closure for significant rehabilitation work.

Earlier this year, Council approved an investment of $2.1 million in the 2025 Capital Budget to address critical deficiencies identified in electrical, mechanical, and structural assessments of the facility. To complete this work, the facility required an earlier-than-usual shutdown in May, with contractors finalizing repairs by mid-August. Once their work was complete, Aquatic staff undertook the detailed process of preparing the facility for reopening, including regular summer maintenance, and the start up procedure of the three pools. While summer maintenance normally begins in June after Fairview Pool opens, this year’s later start extended the process into September.

The completed rehabilitation has not only restored the structural integrity of the Aquatic Centre but has also positioned the facility to continue operating safely and reliably while long-term planning for a new Aquatic Facility remains underway. This planning is being bolstered by the Southwest Facility Foundation, with strong community support behind their fundraising efforts.

The Southwest Facility Foundation, a volunteer-led non-profit, has raised $4.6 million toward its $8 million goal to support new sport, leisure, and recreation facilities in Swift Current. Its current 50/50 For Change campaign runs until October 6, with the jackpot already exceeding $16,000. Learn more at southwestfacilityfoundation.com.

“The Aquatic Centre is an essential service for Swift Current and the Southwest region,” said Mayor Al Bridal. “With 56,000 visits annually, swimming lessons, and lifeguard training that serves the entire area, this facility plays a critical role in health, safety, and recreation. This investment keeps our doors open today, while also preserving the building’s structural value for potential community use well into the future.”

Much like the Stockade facility, once an indoor curling rink and now a multi-use sport, recreation, and event venue, this investment ensures the Aquatic Centre building can continue to serve Swift Current beyond its role as a pool. The rehabilitation ensures that when a new aquatic facility is constructed, the current building may be repurposed for other indoor sport, recreation, or community activities rather than requiring costly demolition.

The City extends its gratitude to residents for their patience during the extended closure and looks forward to welcoming the community back into the Aquatic Centre starting Sunday, September 28, 2025.
