For Immediate Release
April 1, 2025
SWIFT CURRENT, SK – The City of Swift Current’s Light and Power Utility will be implementing the same carbon tax pause for its residential and industrial customers as was announced by the Government of Saskatchewan, aligning with SaskPower. This means that starting today, April 1, 2025, the City of Swift Current will remove the Federal Carbon Tax from all its customers’ utility bills, which also removes the GST applied on carbon charges.
This change follows the Saskatchewan Government’s announcement on March 27, 2025, regarding Federal Carbon Tax relief to be effective April 1, 2025. The link to the Saskatchewan Government’s release is here.
As the City of Swift Current owns its power utility and purchases bulk power from SaskPower, The City will implement changes in the same way as the Crown Corporation announced to its customers. The Federal Carbon Tax will be reduced to $0/kWh starting today. However, customers’ utility bills reflect power usage over the course of the previous month. This means customers will still see a Federal Carbon Tax charge on their City bills for power they used before today’s date, but none applied after today’s date.
The Director of Light and Power for the City of Swift Current, Darryl Tunall, explains, “For the average homeowner in Swift Current, this change will amount to savings of $10 to $15 a month or more, depending on their power consumption, plus save them the GST that had been applied on top. It is a welcome reprieve financially for our customers for as long as the carbon tax pause is in effect by the Province, which could be indefinitely, after the election. If anyone has questions about this, they can email lightandpower@swiftcurrent.ca or call us at 306-778-2770 during business hours, Monday to Friday, between 7:30 am – 12:00 pm or 1:00 pm – 4:30 pm.”
