Proactive Spring Run-off Community Preparedness & Barrier Deployment

Post Date:03/20/2025 2:00 PM

For Immediate Release
March 20, 2025

SWIFT CURRENT, SK – The entire watershed is expected to see more than a week of warmer temperatures, marking a shift from the weather patterns we've experienced earlier this spring. This warming trend will accelerate the runoff of the remaining snowpack, potentially at a faster rate than what we've experienced so far. As a result, the water level in the Swift Current Creek is expected to rise, leading to creek ice break-up, with also the likelihood of some water pooling in general low-lying areas across the city.

Due to the unpredictability of creek ice break-up, we are proactively implementing our planned barrier deployment in areas that are historically the most vulnerable to higher creek levels. Given the changeability of ice movement, we want to ensure that all homeowners along the creek are informed and prepared for elevated water conditions over the coming weeks, allowing them to take the necessary steps that best suit their needs.

Chief Hunter explains, "We're taking preemptive steps to support our community. Homeowners can fill personal sandbags to safeguard their property, with sand and sandbags available at no cost as part of our community support efforts. Protecting your home from spring runoff is an essential step in minimizing potential disruptions for homeowners." City residents are also encouraged to take simple precautions to protect their properties, such as ensuring proper drainage around foundations, clearing eavestroughs, and securing basements and window wells against general water run-off.
