SWIFT CURRENT, SK – The City of Swift Current received a contribution from the Government of Canada’s Active Transportation Fund allowing a one-kilometre extension to their multi-use pathways and sidewalks project, which effectively closes a major gap in the mobility network within the Northeast area.
The new section of pathway begins on the north side of the Trans-Canada Highway near Adams Street, crossing underneath the highway, continuing adjacent to Memory Gardens Cemetery, and connecting to the newly constructed pathway on the west side of Memorial Drive (Highway 4). This connection to the rest of the Chinook Parkway provides pedestrians and cyclists an alternative route to access the amenities and other areas of the city on either side of Highways #1 and #4, in a safe manner.
Construction on the extension project began in April with site preparation, followed by the installation of 1.0 kilometre of asphalt pathway, retaining walls underneath the highway bridges, park lighting, privacy fencing, tree planting and landscaping, for a total project cost of $708,000.
Under the Active Transportation Fund, the Government of Canada contributed $329,319 towards the total project cost, with the City of Swift Current contributing the remainder.
“We are proud to celebrate the unveiling of the new 1-kilometre multi-use asphalt pathway in Swift Current,” said the Honourable Dan Vandal, Minister of Northern Affairs, PrairiesCan and CanNor, on behalf of the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities. “This new path will improve connectivity throughout the city and make it easier for community members to enjoy outdoor activities and get where they need to go.
His Worship Al Bridal, Mayor of the City of Swift Current, shared these comments: "This extension to our Chinook Parkway allows our residents of all ages, to safely cross the highway either walking or riding their bikes, without worrying about highway traffic. This is truly an exciting improvement especially for families in the Northeast area that have not enjoyed that peace of mind before. We are very grateful to the Government of Canada for their investment and are looking forward to the ribbon cutting next week that will mark the project completion.”
The ceremonial ribbon cutting will take place on the newly extended pathway on September 18, 2024, at 11:00 a.m.
