The City of Swift Current has seen a significant uptick in the number of sewer main backups that have taken place in our community this year. These backups are the result of improper items being flushed down toilets.
The good news? It’s very simple to avoid raw sewage backups by limiting what you flush down your toilet.
The better news? It’s even easier to remember what you CAN flush down your toilet:
- Human Waste
- Toilet Paper
The No Flush Zone
Anything other than human waste and toilet paper that is flushed can potentially cause a raw sewage backup in your system. Some of the COMMON CULPRITS that you should NOT flush include:
- Wipes (even those labelled “Flushable”)
- Cooking Grease
- Feminine Hygiene Products (even those labelled “Flushable”)
- Dental Floss
- Prescription Medication
We encourage you to avoid flushing any items other than human waste and toilet paper. Ultimately, if your sewer main backs up as a result of poor flushing habits, the potential costs and headaches can be significant. Your best bet? Keep your bowl happy!
