Building Bylaw Requirements and
DO I NEED A PERMIT & WHY?
The City of Swift Current Building Bylaw requires a permit be issued prior to the commencement of any construction, erection, placement, alteration, repair, renovation, demolition, relocation or removal of a building or structure.
The demolition permit gives the City Building and Tax Departments information to ensure the safety of our neighborhoods and to adjust your taxes as required.
HOW DO I APPLY & WHAT DO I NEED?
Applications shall be in writing on the form supplied by the City indicating; owners name, address, site address, legal description and description of work. All taxes on the building or any part thereof that is to be demolished shall be paid prior to the issuing of a permit.
PERMIT FEE & DAMAGE DEPOSIT
The City charges a fee of fifty ($50.00) dollars for a Demolition or a Moving Permit, this is for office supplies and inspections.
A damage deposit of five hundred ($500.00) dollars is required, in addition to the permit fee when applying for either a Demolition or a Moving Permit.
PERMIT TIME LIMIT
All demolition permits shall expire six (6) months after the date of issue or at such earlier date as may be stated on the permit.
DAMAGE DEPOSIT REFUND
When a building has been moved or demolished and the site has been cleared and repaired to the satisfaction of the City's authorized representative, the damage deposit, less any charges, will be refunded.
PROPERTY CLEAN UP
The owner or his agent of the property from which the building/structure is to be demolished shall remove all rubbish and material and fill in any unused excavation to existing grade level of the property so that the premises are left in a safe and sanitary condition.
WATER & SEWER SERVICE
Existing water and sanitary sewer service connections to the property may be reused under the following conditions:
- The water service is not smaller than 20 mm (3/4 inch) in size and does not consist of lead material.
- The sewer service is to be inspected by the City of Swift Current, using specialized video equipment, to ensure it is structurally sound and in proper working order. This service is provided free of charge.
The City shall be notified if a service is not to be reused. The City will then terminate the service(s) at the owners expense. This will involve disconnecting the water service at the main line and/or plugging the sewer service as near to the main line as practical.
