February 1, 2023
Effective today, February 1, 2023, the interim Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for the City of Swift Current officially takes on his new role.
Mr. Jim Jones, General Manager of Community Services, was appointed interim CAO at the City of Swift Current’s City Council meeting on January 9, 2023, in accordance with the Cities Act. As the administrative head of the City, the CAO oversees and ensures City operations are maintained and handled efficiently and effectively, while providing leadership to its employees. The CAO is accountable to City Council and leads the implementation of Council’s priorities.
Jim Jones joined the City of Swift Current as General Manager of Community Services in July of 2019. At the time he had spent twenty-five (25) years prior, in various positions in recreation, management and leadership throughout Saskatchewan and Alberta, including several municipal positions within the City of Leduc, Alberta – a community of 30,000 people. With the City of Leduc, Jim has held the positions of Community Development Coordinator, Sport and Agricultural Tourism Coordinator, Manager of Community Development & Culture, and Manager of Community Partnerships & Sponsorships.
Mr. Jones also served as Executive Director of the Alberta Amateur Softball Association in Edmonton for a period of twelve (12) years, directing a seventeen-member Provincial board of directors. Always up for a challenge, Jim has a long history of providing leadership in projects and events. He has been the host chairman, director, president, coach, or committee member for countless sporting events, including the 2012 Hockey Canada TELUS Cup, the 2010 Hockey Alberta Cup, several Western Canadian Championships, and is even a member of the Softball Canada Hall of Fame, twice!
After attending Camrose Lutheran College in Camrose, Alberta, and The United States International University in San Diego, California, on hockey scholarships, Jim graduated from Kelsey Institute of Applied Arts & Sciences with a diploma in Recreation in 1984. He is also a graduate of the University of Alberta Certificate in Municipal Management and Leadership program.
Jim has a background in agriculture operating a mixed cattle and grain farm near Conquest, Saskatchewan. He is married to Lynne, a retired registered nurse. They have two grown sons; one of which is a teacher in Calmar, Alberta and the other is the Brand and Promotions Manager for the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League.
Since joining the City in 2019, Jim has been designated as Interim CAO on various occasions to cover the former CAO’s leaves and has proven himself to be a highly capable replacement.
As Interim CAO, Mr. Jones will have all the powers, duties, accountabilities, and functions of the CAO as outlined within The Administration Bylaw No. 21 – 2003. He will serve at the pleasure of City Council until a permanent appointment is made, after which he will return to his position as General Manager of Community Services.
