Chinook School Division’s support of Safe Places yields positive results

SWIFT CURRENT, SK – Just a few short months after Chinook School Division offered its support of Safe Places – Youth Certified by endorsing the initiative, three schools have completed staff certification and officially become Proud Supporters of Safe Places.

“The École Centennial, CAMPS and Fairview Schools and their staff made a commitment to become Safe Places certified, and to extend the opportunity to parents who volunteer with the Schools,” said Safe Places Manager Kelly Schafer. “We want to thank these schools and Chinook School Division for leading the way in the education sector in our community.”

Organizations that have a minimum of 80% of their staff certified can officially become ‘Proud Supporters’ of the Safe Places initiative, allowing them to prominently display promotional materials at their place of business, demonstrating to all visitors that they take the safety of children very seriously.

"In our profession, we have the privilege of working every single day with children. Every school, including Fairview, strives to provide a safe and caring environment for all children. This program afforded our staff the opportunity to make a renewed commitment to our students, our parents and our community that we believe the safety and well-being of all children is a priority and we will do our part to ensure this safety. We believe in the importance of this program and were thankful to have the opportunity and support of the City of Swift Current, Safe Places and the Respect Group to participate," said Fairview School Principal Travis Kelln.

École Centennial School Principal Angela Schindel said: “Our team is thankful and proud to be part of a school division and city who are committed to the safety of our youth. Having the Chinook School Division and City of Swift Current provide Safe Places Youth Certification training at no cost to our parents and staff demonstrates the value placed on the safety of our youth. The certification process is user-friendly and very informative. Staff felt it was straightforward, relevant, and helpful. We truly appreciated Kelly guiding us through the process and being available to support us.”

Chinook School Division Board Chair, Kim Pridmore, is proud of all of the staff and volunteers who are part of the first schools to certify. “Everyone who has children and who works directly with children sees student safety as a priority. We are pleased that our schools have shown interest and continued leadership in ensuring the health and safety of our students,” said Pridmore.

As part of the roll-out to the education sector, Safe Places and its partner, Respect Group, offered free online Respect training to the first two schools that agreed to fully participate in the opportunity.

“This is a priority sector, and we wanted to make sure we could eliminate as many hurdles as possible to assist school staff in achieving certification,” said Schafer. “Moving forward, we are still going to be able to offer preferred pricing options to the Schools, and we would like to invite anyone involved in the education sector as a parent, employee, volunteer or teacher to reach out and find out how they can be Proud Supporters of Safe Places.”
